USS Wasp and her sister ships are the first specifically designed to accommodate new Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach and Harrier II (AV-8B) Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) jets which provide close air support for the assault force. In 2007 she was the first ship to deploy the V-22 Osprey, and most recently in 2011 she was modified to accommodate the new Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft.

His understanding of the interaction of ships with the natural forces of wind and water gives his images life and vitality.
