The USS Rhode Island (SSBN-740) is the third ship of the U.S. Navy to be named for the 13th state of the Union.
In 2011 Rhode Island was awarded the Omaha Trophy in recognition for superior performance and setting fleet standards in the field of strategic deterrence. In 2009 she rescued 5 Bahamian fishermen whose vessel had capsized, and gave them medical treatment before transferring them to another ship to take them to shore. In 2007, Rhode Island was named the "official ballistic missile submarine" of The Colbert Report TV show after crew members submitted photos of a "Colbert Nation" poster taken at different locations aboard the vessel. |
