Nautical Chart by Adam Koltz |
The USS Michigan (SSBN-727/SSGN-727) is the third ship of the U.S. Navy to be named for the state of Michigan. Michigan, along with three other Ohio-class nuclear-powered trident missile submarines (USS Ohio, USS Florida, and USS Georgia) was modified in 2007 to the SSGN classification, adding new capabilities while at the same time allowing her to remain in service carrying conventionally armed guided missiles.
In 2010 she was one of three Ohio-class submarines involved in a US response to Chinese missile testing in the contested East China Sea. Michigan, Ohio, and Florida all surfaced simultaneously in the waters off South Korea, the Philippines, and the British Indian Ocean Territory respectively. China immediately ceased all missile testing in the region. |
