Completed in Finland in 1981, Kapitan Khlebnikov is a Russian polar-class iceabreaker that was refitted in the 1990s to serve as an adventure cruise ship for arctic and antarctic expeditionary tours and scientific mission charters. She was the first ship to circumnavigate Antarctica carrying passengers in 1996-97.

In 2009, during an antarctic excursion, she was trapped in ice for several days with 101 passengers aboard, most of them UK citizens. Among the passengers was a BBC film crew taping a documentary called “Frozen Planet.”
