Nautical Chart by Adam Koltz |
Virtually identical to her sister ship the Kapitan Khlebnikov, the powerful Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn was built in 1990 and upgraded in 1999. Designed to navigate the most remote Arctic reaches, her main function was to pilot cargo ships through the Northern Sea Route, and the Baltic Sea. She also engaged in tours and scientific research missions. In 1996 she made the first around-the-world voyage, and participated in rescuing the German ship MS Hanseatic, with 135 passengers aboard.
